Created in 1985 (180 employees), Dolphin Integration is specialised in the development and sales of virtual components for System on Chip. Since April 2004, the company has adopted a collegial direction based on the three founders: Michel DEPEYROT, Jean François POLLET, Louis ZANGARA. The headquarters is in Meylan, France (where the main part of the development is done), completed by two subsidiaries, one in Duisburg (Germany) with a team specialised in MEMS and one in Montreal (Quebec) with a team specialised in embedded Power Management.
Dolphin group is organised around 3 activities:
- IPs (Analog-Logic Converters, memories, microcontrollers, standard cell libraries). These IPs are developed in technologies going from 0.35um to 40nm. This activity represents around 60% of Dolphin's turnover.
- Design services: Dolphin Integration is specialised in the design of mixed signal systems on chip and component for multi-foundries. In this area, our main know-how lies in the field of technological migration, SoC integration, mixed signal design, layout (analog, logic and mixed), simulation... This activity represents around 30% of Dolphin's turnover.
- EDA development: Dolphin Integration provides a set of EDA solutions dedicated to design, validation and modelisation of mixed signal circuits. The main EDA solution is a mixed signal simulator called "SMASH". This activity represents around 10% of Dolphin's turnover.

Defence Electronics' integrated activities
Defence Electronics (DE), the Electronics House of EADS Defence & Security, develops and manufactures sensors, avionics and electronic warfare systems for military and security applications. All DE solutions are adapted to meet the changing priorities of security and military forces: command and control capability, reconnaissance, mobility, efficiency in operation, protection of own forces. Its aim is to provide the customer with high-end products based on key technologies and reliability.
Equipment which is foreseen for safety critical operation both in civil and military avionic applications (e. g. Flight Control) are developed according DO254 regulations. Certification issues according to RTCA - DO254 standards are becoming a key requirement. Especially systems in military aircrafts and UAV's are fully affected by this trend.

The current trend in military communication systems and equipment is an ever increasing demand for flexibility, configurability and functionality of system components to adapt to internationally co-ordinated missions and interoperability scenarios. To meet this demand new technologies and methodologies must be explored for implementation of subsystem components that have traditionally been implemented in discrete logic and ASIC technology. This also includes cryptographic components targeted for application in equipment meeting high grade standards.
Necessary flexibility and re-configurability needed in future secure communication equipment can be achieved through exploitation of reprogrammable FPGA technology. The flexibility and re-configurability of this technology is directly in contradiction with the extreme requirements for function integrity and function separation that high grade standard's introduce. A comprehensive analysis of the actual vulnerabilities of utilising reprogrammable FPGA and the establishment of countermeasures must be performed. This includes all aspects of the technology throughout the life-cycle of the equipment that implements it. Trust and assurance in development tools and production equipment must be established, as well as guidelines for correct segmentation of functional blocks.

Menta is a new start-up company based in Montpellier in the south of France that specializes in reconfigurable and programmable IP. Menta design highly efficient embedded-FPGA technology for SoC, ASIC or SiP design and software that is required for this IP. The Menta’s embedded FPGA technology is highly customisable so a domain specific-FPGA (dsFPGA) can be used in SoC which provides extensive features for the target applications giving enormous benefits in terms of area, power consumption and speed. Targeted applications include multimedia, telecommunication, security…
Thank to the evolution of the SoC market, reconfigurable structure now become a reality. The interest of such structure growing rapidly and will become, in the future, the solution for a lot of problems. The participation of the Menta company in this project will be the opportunity to take part in a leading European program to create SoC of the future for defence application. This project will be an opportunity to continue its internal R&D program, develop specific knowledge on military specificities and will open new market for the embedded-FPGA (eFPGA).

As described in SDS R&D experience here above, the heart of competencies and a big part of Sagem DS military business is centred on sensors and sensors data fusion technologies and the derived application and products with a particular focus on the Target detection, recognition, identification and tracking chain. In this context it is of primary importance for Sagem DS to prepare and anticipate the technological evolutions in these areas of activities. These anticipating activities will allow maintaining products and systems with state of the art performances and functionality. It will also contribute to maintain at Sagem DS a high level of knowledge and skills allowing to consolidate at national level an industrial and technology base for defence. These skills will also allow to support MOD, with high level expertise and service for developing future advanced military systems and for supporting the systems actually in operation (felin, missiles, sighting systems…).

SED (Special Electronic Design) s.r.l. is an Italian SME with a consolidated know-how in high tech electronics design such as the development of Hardware using DSP with dedicated algorithms, Fpga and ASICs.
The company boasts in house advanced manufacturing capabilities on multilayer board on conventional and special substrates with particular reference to high speed transfer buses among processors. SED also operates as a Research Laboratory, named "Leonardo", authorised by the Italian Ministry of University and Research to act as Transfer Technology Centre oriented to research and applicable studies on the advanced technologies in order to increase the competitiveness of the Industries on the market. ST interest on configurable logic platforms is also growing rapidly. Such families of SoCs named also Structured ASICs are a new breed of custom device that approach the performance of today's Standard Cell ASIC while dramatically simplifying the design complexity. Structured ASICs offer designers a set of devices with specific, customizable metal layers along with predefined metal layers, which can contain the underlying pattern of logic cells, memory, and I/O. By virtue of the predefined structures, the ASIC vendor can design any time-consuming task — such as test, signal integrity and IR drop — into the architecture. As a reference, SPEAr product is a good example of how embedded programmable logic is used to cope with deep-submicron technology challenges (mask cost, reliability…). The CEACI (Centre of Evaluation and Analysis of Information Technology Components) is an ITSEF evaluation centre belonging to the TSS company. It has been created in 1994 and is located in the CNES buildings in Toulouse. The CEACI shares state of the art equipments for failure analysis (Focused Ion Beam microscope, Atomic force microscope...) and physical/electrical characterisation with the CNES (French Space agency) central laboratory under a private partnership.
The CEACI is a ITSEF (IT security evalutation facility) accredited by the French certification body DCSSI for ITSEC and Common Criteria evaluations (E3 high ITSEC, evaluation of hardware equipment / EAL 4+ Common Criteria) and is COFRAC ISO 17025 accreditated for the evaluation of security products. It is the main French ITSEF with a positioning in the international market place.
The CEACI has a strong experience in evaluations and in the application of ITSEC and Common Criteria, based on various security product evaluations for administration, automotive, banking, computing, defence, telecom, transport, ... CEACI operates in the components and HW/SW area that encompasses a broad range of security products : smart cards, RFID, USB tokens, secured flash cards, secure microcontrollers, ASICs, FPGAs, HSMs, terminals, encryptors ....
CEACI uses attack techniques in attempts to breach security and access confidential information that is believed to be protected.
CEACI is a full partner of WP3 all along the project duration, to contribute to state of the art European secure solutions on FPGA.
CEACI will bring its expertise and further develop it on FPGA and the related possible reverse, such to get insurance that the final product is conformant to the specifications (place & route, fonctional & logical blocks, protection mechanism). The design tools properties will be evaluated (traceability of security requirements inside the tools and the resulting design).
In addition, CEACI is working on hardware security testing since 1999. Most of the techniques used can be applied on FPGA or SoCs products . CEACI will so be able to search for vulnerabilities on demonstrators by applying state of the art penetration tests on both type of platform. Sensibility against side channel analysis and fault injection will be tested on FPGA and SoC prototypes developed during the project.
Based on state of the art techniques in failure analysis and security evaluation, CEACI will make "reverse engineering" on the programming bitstream in order to ensure that the final product fully satisfies the specifications issued by EDA SoC partners. Some research work is already performed in the laboratory in order to apply most advanced techniques such as dynamic light emission on last generation FPGA in order to reverse engineer the implemented code and/or break the security functions implemented (typically extact a secret key during cryptographic computations). Classical side channels attacks (SPA/ DPA) have also been done with on FPGA implementations. Further related research will be developed during EDA SoC program.

Thales Communications and Security is involved in the design and development embedded system which has strong requirements in term of SAWP constraints: Autonomy, weight and form factor are key for a majority of pour development. The trends in COTS does not provide adequate solution to fulfil all the requirements due to the customisation of the ASSP or standard components to a class of application with strong constraints in term of time to market and unit price (large volume). Security are also a subject of interest for TCF as many of our communication system rely on cryptographic devices to protect the content and the communication.
Furthermore, Most of the digital components are US based and their access is not guaranteed for non US company.
Thanks to this project, TCF expect an European solution providing integration capabilities allowing us to develop our business and fulfil the customer requirements.
THALES Italia SpA
Founded in 1946, as Telettra, Thales Italia S.p.A. – Land & Joint Systems Division (from now on also indicated as TIT) is a company of the Thales Group, which operates in national and international markets in the field of defense and security forces systems.
TIT turnover in 2008 has been around 21 M€ with 110 people. Operations and Technical Departments are located in Chieti Scalo (Chieti); Commercial and Marketing Departments are located in Rome.
TIT operates in several business areas, such as Strategic Communications Systems, Tactical Communications Systems and Electronic Defence Systems
In these areas TIT designs and produces radio equipment in the HF/VHF/UHF/SHF bands and integrates them into communications systems for various applications. In Electronic Defence Systems, a major business activity is related to Wide Band interception and jamming systems in HF band.
TIT has expertise and skills in core techniques and technologies such as:
- RF and millimetric circuits: radio receivers and emitters in several frequency bands from HF to millimetric band (40 GHz);
- Digital signal processing: applied to data demodulation and channel equalization, spread spectrum and signal analysis;
- Real time SW;
- Field Programmable Gate Arrays.
TIT is involved, trough several study programs developed also in international cooperation, in many research areas such as:
- Wireless LAN for military applications, to support robust multimedia services among vehicles while on the move;
- Future soldier radio technology for communications and localizations purposes at squad level;
- Ultra Wide Band technology for soldier applications;
- Tactical Internet in very mobile environment (Command Post at Brigade level and below).
Thanks to this project, TIT expects a solution providing integration capabilities in applications requiring high integration levels and low power dissipation, specifically for hand-held radio terminals to be used in Defence and Security market.
THALES Norways AS (TNOR)
Thales Norway is a subsidiary company of the Thales Group resident in Norway. The company has 180 employees and about 2/3 of these are involved in R/D. The main focus areas are security products, voice communication solutions and system integration.
Thales Norway has for more than 50 years been a key supplier to NATO for encryption solutions at all security levels. A key component today is the Cryptel-IP product TCE621, which is selected by NATO as NICE standard for encryption of classified traffic through IP-based networks. The product is widely introduced as a vital security mechanism for of various NATO applications, between fixed sites as well as in out of area multi-national operations.
The company is also supplier of other solutions for ensuring a secure and reliable information exchange in military applications. In the ACCS program Thales Norway is supplying the Voice Communication System (VCS) offering a unique red/black separation enabling ACCS operators a unique flexibility to utilize both classified and non-classified communication resources from the same operator positions.
Another central product is the XO-mail system introduced in NATO and several NATO- nations for controlled distribution of message traffic dependent on classification levels, priority and available communication channels.
Traditional implementation of high grade cryptography using secure production lines by trusted ASICmanufacturers can no longer provide cost-effective and flexible solutions and offer access to advanced stateof-the art technology.
New cryptographic chips will be high speed complex systems (SoC) that must support a variety of protocols, algorithms and key management systems. This can be done using reconfigurable devices like FPGA, but the actual security provided by this technology is an important area for further research.
A high-grade crypto implementation must not leak sensitive information even in the presence of an active attacker. The project must therefore identify technology-related threats and vulnerabilities and define proper countermeasures.
Major challenges for a technology project in this area will be to establish objective knowledge about the real trust and assurance offered by the new configurable technologies, and to investigate the assurance provided by the tool chain used for chip development.
